So there’s this new song by Carly Rae Jepsen called “Call Me Maybe”. It’s catchy, it’s stupid, and thus I love it. I am however confused as to why a bunch of Disney stars decided to sing and dance to it… but they did and the video is below.

So recently someone sent in the this question:

“Please tell me WHY guys who have been treated like crap by certain girls and will tell a person that they’re over it and they’re not going to talk to them ever again end up running back to the girl anyways? I just don’t get it and it’s so hypocritical! Because they’ll say “oh i don’t talk to so and so anymore because she treats me terribly” and yet they try so hard to keep talking to them anyways and then act like nothings wrong.”

There’s no exact answer for this, but I’ll do my best. First of all, I think we need to expand this. It isn’t just a guy/girl issue, everyone does it. I’ve seen this scenario so many times, I’ve lived this scenario, I’ve been this person. The only thing I can think of that truly answers why anyone goes back to a bad situation or to a person that keeps leaving, is insecurity. I dated a guy who did this to me, time after time, my friends hated him, my parents couldn’t stand watching me ride the roller coaster that was that relationship, and it wore me down. So why did I go back? Well there are a few reasons, the first being that I felt like he needed me. I could justify his leaving because of the things going on at the time. I didn’t blame myself, never did that, but I just never knew how to say no to him. I was also really insecure then. I hadn’t come in to my own yet, and was stuck in this idea that I couldn’t do any better. How does this happen? Well it doesn’t start off as a bad relationship. It starts really great and those great moments are the ones that you cling to. They’re the moments that allow you to forgive the bad, that’s why you go back. You’re holding on to those happy moments, because when it gets that bad they’re all you’ve got, and that’s really sad. What you have to realize if you’re watching a friend go through this that you have to be constructive with them. When people said, just leave – he’s a dick, I defended him, even knowing the relationship was wrong I couldn’t stand knowing other people knew. So, don’t attack because it will only make your friend defensive and feel judged. Also trust that they’ll eventually figure it out, it took me awhile but I did. I learned so much about myself and now I couldn’t be happier. I spent time just being single and having fun and am now in a much healthier relationship, so I don’t regret but I also know I would never ever go back to that place. Life comes with a curve, it’s easy to see what the issue is from the outside looking in, but when you’re the one in the situation you can be blinded. So give your friend a little slack, he’ll come around and figure it out. There’s a reason he’s staying and only he knows what that reason is, but it’s up to you to be there and support him until he realizes that reason isn’t reason enough. You can help and nudge, but don’t push, because it’ll only make it worse.

I can only hope that at some point Taylor writes a song about Zac, there are tons of words that rhyme with his name like mack, and attack and back and sack. Joe Pa and Golf Balls.

With everything going on here at PSU, I don’t think I could have read this at a better time. So please read this, all of it, and make room for the golf balls in your life. If there is one thing we can learn from Joe Paterno and his life it is that no matter what, he always made room for golf balls – and he included every student at Penn State in his mayonnaise jar.

“When things in your life seem, almost too much to handle,
When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class
and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students, if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open Areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

‘Now,’ said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things – family,
children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions –
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else –The small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ He continued,
there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are important to you.

So…

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play With your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

‘Take care of the golf balls first –
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled
‘I’m glad you asked’.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
There’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’”

Heroes Are Remembered, Legends Never Die.

As news of Joe Pa’s death hits hard I feel like it is only right for this moment to honor the legend. Joe Paterno is part of the reason I came to Penn State. He helped create a family that is standing strong by his side and welcomes everyone with open arms. Joe wanted to be remembered as more than a football coach, so that is what I’m choosing to discuss right now. In the fall of 1950 Joe started his life at Penn State as an assistant coach to Rip Engle. It was here at PSU where he met a cute freshman girl, Susan Pohland, in the library. Which leads me to wonder if maybe the stern coach donated so much for the library because he had a soft spot for the place where he met the love of his life as well as trying to strengthen academics. Joe went on to be a father of five, and a grandfather of seventeen with his wife of nearly 50 years. Joe was a giving man. He gave so much of himself to this school in order to try to make it better, which he did. When people are asked about their favorite THON memory, his visit comes up nine times out of ten. It is a shame that so many people turned on him the last few months, but it was true believers and Penn Staters that stayed true. People think the riot was stupid, and maybe it was. It was rash and driven by emotion, but let me ask you this: if you were wronged would thousands of people show up to support you? That should be enough to explain how we all feel about Joe, but it will never be enough. It is hard to understand why we love him if you are not part of the PSU family. That’s what we are, a family and Joe was and will always be the patriarch. He lead the football team with confidence, dignity, and class. He believed in academics before winning a game and most importantly he believed in Penn State. So, thank you Joe. You will always be our coach. You will always be with us. You will always be everything that WE ARE.
